Kudos
Jane Kaplan, modern languages and literatures, was
honored in September by being named a Chevalier dans lOrdre
des Palmes Académiques by the prime minister of France.
The award recognizes individuals who have contributed to the
propagation of French language and culture in the United States.
Colleen Kattau, modern languages and literatures, has
codeveloped a multimedia presentation that she hopes will contribute
to closing down the controversial School of the Americas in Georgia.
Titled "Sing it Down!" the project has been presented
at more than 15 colleges and communities in New York, Pennsylvania,
Virginia, and Georgia. In October she presented "New Song
as a Social Tool" at Colgate University. During the summer
of 1998 she was awarded a library research fellowship by Cornells
Latin America Studies Program. She translated an article for
Tricontinental (Havana, Cuba, vol. 138, 1998), and her
article "Latin American New Song" appeared in Latin
America: An Interdisciplinary Approach.
Julio López-Arias and Gladys M. Varona-Lacey,
modern languages and literatures, coedited and published Latin
America: An Interdisciplinary Approach (New York: Peter Lang
Publishing, 1999). The book presents a broad perspective of Latin
America and highlights its major events, issues, and political,
social, and economic changes. |
