Kalinowski Memorial Service Scheduled for Muller Chapel
A memorial service will be held
on Saturday, April 10, to celebrate the life of associate professor
of psychology Janet Kalinowski, who died on March 14 at the age
of 46. The 11:00 a.m. service will be held in Muller Chapel.
In her memory, friends and colleagues
have established the Janet Kalinowski Student Development Fund
in Womens Studies. The fund is intended to support students
engaged in the study of issues surrounding gender and social
position. It may provide financial assistance to conduct research
and to participate in professional conferences, special training,
and other educational opportunities that will enhance the intellectual
growth of the student. Those wishing to contribute to the fund
should contact Kristen Ford in the Office of Planned and Leadership
Giving, Alumni Hall.
Kalinowski earned bachelors degrees from Sarah Lawrence
College and the Columbia University School of Nursing, a masters
degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education,
and a doctoral degree from Cornell University. She joined the
psychology department in 1986 and was promoted to associate professor
in 1995.
A specialist in developmental psychology, Kalinowski taught
from a life-span perspective, with a particular concern for issues
faced by females. Her experiences working with the aging, with
adolescents, and in early childhood education added an important
dimension to her teaching. In 1982 she was honored with an invitation
to join the National Conference of Education for Womens
Development, a group of researchers founded by the authors of
Womens Ways of Knowing. On campus she was active
in helping to establish a womens studies program at the
College and in the development of the curriculum for that program.
She served on a number of College committees, including the Gerontology
Task Force, and as an affiliate of the Gerontology Institute.
While on sabbatical in the spring of 1997 she taught psychology
courses in the Semester at Sea Academic Program.
Kalinowski is survived by her son, Danny. |
