FDA Students Meet Maya Angelou

Before giving her Commencement address, Maya Angelou met with a delegation from the Frederick Douglass Academy. The students, who had been studying Angelou and her works, got a chance to visit the campus and meet the renowned writer, thanks to a partnership between their central Harlem high school and the College. "All knowledge is spendable currency, depending on the market," Angelou told the group. "You can’t learn anything that won’t be of use sometime in your life."

Angelou autographed a volume of her selected poems for the students, who presented her with a poem of their own that was written especially for the occasion. Once closed because of poor student performance, the Frederick Douglass Academy is now acclaimed nationwide for its devotion to academic rigor and student achievement. The partnership between the College and the academy was formed in 1998 to enhance educational opportunities at both institutions.
