School of Music Announces 1999–2000 Concert Season

The Roman numerals for 2,000 — MM — are the inspiration for the College’s 1999–2000 concert series, "MMusic." The three-concert season, which features the River City Brass Band, double bassist Edgar Meyer, and the Bang on a Can All-Stars, will present a range of music that includes Bach, Sousa, Broadway tunes, ragtime, and new age.

All three concerts will take place in the Walter B. Ford Concert Hall, located in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. One of the features of the new Whalen Center is an enclosed, barrier-free walkway connecting the concert hall to a parking area reserved for concertgoers on the evening of each performance.

Season subscriptions to "MMusic" — offering a 20 percent discount — are available at the following levels:

  • children, senior citizens, Ithaca College students — $21.50 ($27.00 value);
  • Ithaca College alumni, faculty, staff, and administrators; members of the Friends of Ithaca College; other students — $36.00 ($45.00 value);
  • general public — $43.00 ($54.00 value).

The new season opens September 25, 1999, with the River City Brass Band of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1981 as a modern replica of the brass bands that existed at the turn of this century, the group performs traditional band works. However, the River City Brass Band has a wide repertoire that includes rags, Broadway tunes, Sousa marches, and more than a dozen compositions the band commissioned and premiered.

Edgar Meyer, a vibrant performer and innovative composer, will present a solo double bass recital February 10, 2000. Meyer has entertained audiences at the Aspen, Caramoor, and Tanglewood festivals and is a regularly performing member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

The Bang on a Can All-Stars will close the season April 3, 2000. Uniting the sounds of a classical ensemble, jazz band, and rock band, the six members of this new-age ensemble have a unique instrumentation, which includes clarinets, saxophones, electric guitar, violoncello, bass keyboards, and percussion. The All-Stars first collaborated in 1989 at the Bang on a Can Festival and have become a regular feature at that event.
