Suzanne Kunkel to Give Gerontology Series Talk

Suzanne KunkelThe Gerontology Institute’s Distinguished Speaker Series will continue on Monday, October 4, with a talk by Suzanne Kunkel, director of the Scripps Gerontology Center and associate professor in the Department of Sociology, Gerontology, and Anthropology at Miami University. Kunkel’s talk, "Aging People in an Aging World," is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public; a reception will follow.

Kunkel has been involved in several large-scale studies to determine the future of long-term-care needs for the nation and for Ohio and its counties. Her projections of population aging and the impact on long-term-care needs have expanded to include a focus on global aging and the consequences of a rapidly aging society on less developed regions of the world.

Kunkel’s research also includes a federally funded project designed to develop and evaluate innovations in home care. She is the author of several research articles and monographs, including a textbook, Aging: The Social Contract, published in 1998 and coauthored by Leslie Morgan.

Kunkel is currently president of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education and a board member for several state and local organizations. She received a doctorate in sociology/demography from the University of Cincinnati. She holds a master’s degree from Miami University and a bachelor’s degree from Edgecliff College.
