River City Brass BandThe Ithaca College Concerts season will start on Saturday, September 25, with the rich sounds of the River City Brass Band. The performance will take place at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall of the James J. Whalen Center for Music. A pre-concert lecture by Keith Kaiser, assistant professor of music, will begin at 7:30 in the lecture hall. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the Ticket Center at Clinton House or at Rebop Records, Tapes, and Compact Discs in Collegetown.

The River City Brass Band hails from Pittsburgh and is known for its artistic performances of such classics as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "Ol’ Man River," and medleys that feature the work of such composers as Glenn Miller and Irving Berlin. Joining the River City Brass Band on the Berlin medley is vocalist Thom Douglas.

Founded in 1981 by Robert Bernat, the River City Brass Band was modeled after the more than 80 brass bands that existed in Pittsburgh at the turn of the century. Since its debut performance at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s British Music Festival, the band has undertaken a number of national and international tours that have developed a wide fan base. Under the baton of Dennis Colwell the band has expanded its regular touring schedule throughout the eastern United States.

The band has released 11 recordings on its own label, including Pittsburgh on Parade, Footlifters, Concert in the Park, Heartland, and Christmas! Big Band Brass! These recordings are distributed throughout the United States and Canada by New York’s Empire Music Group.
