Lee Goodhew and Gordon Stout to Give Faculty Recital

Lee GoodhewLee Goodhew(left), associate professor of bassoon, and Gordon Stout (below), professor of marimba, will give a free recital of solos and duets on Thursday, October 21. The performance will take place at 8:15 p.m. in the recital hall of the James J. Whalen Center for Music.

Among the pieces featured will be Stout’s Duo for Bassoon and Marimba, which he and Goodhew premiered at the International Double Reed Conference at Northwestern University. The piece is one work in a series of duets Stout composed for marimba and other instruments, including tuba, violin, and guitar. Also on the Gordon Stoutprogram is Chinese composer Chin Chin Chenn’s quartet The Wind from the Woods. Scored for two bassoons and two marimbas, the piece takes advantage of the diverse timbre of the instruments and mimics sounds of nature, including bird calls. Assisting on this performance will be marimbist Naoko Takado, a graduate student in the School of Music, and bassoonist David Conn, a lecturer in music at Cornell University.

Goodhew spent last summer in residence at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. She has performed with the Dallas Symphony, Dallas Ballet, and Syracuse Symphony. Her recordings can be heard on the Open Loop and Mark record labels.

Stout is also a seasoned performer and has appeared at Carnegie Hall as a member of the Wilder Duo with trumpet player Robert Levy. The featured marimbist at 11 International Percussive Arts Society conventions, Stout has recorded a range of contemporary works, including his own compositions, with Golden Crest and Neuma records.
