Whalen Center Opening
College
and community guests joined together October 12 to celebrate
the formal opening of the James J. Whalen Center for Music. The
Friday night concert in the new recital hall included guest pianist
Mícheál O Súilleabháin (left), director
of the Irish World
Music Centre at the University of Limerick, and Gail Williams
73 (below, left), professor of horn at Northwestern University.
Delivering
remarks at Saturdays ribbon-cutting ceremony (above right
and right) were Herman E. Muller Jr. 51, chairman of the
board of trustees; Marjorie Rooke Schwab 69, chair of the
Whalen Centers fund-raising campaign; President Peggy R.
Williams; president emeritus James J. Whalen; and Arthur E. Ostrander,
dean of the School of Music.
An open house
Satuday afternoon featured performances by student and faculty
ensembles and soloists, including the concert band (left). Among
the individual rooms dedicated at the opening were the Karel
Husa Gallery (below), which houses a collection of manuscripts,
memorabilia, and archives from the Pulitzer Prize winning
former professor of composition; and the David
and Evelyn Sass Music Technology Classroom (below, right), which
contains 20 Power Macintosh computers equipped with music composition
software and sequencers.
