Expert on Aging to Speak

Graham D. RowlesThe Gerontology Institute Distinguished Speaker Series will continue on Thursday, November 4, with a talk by Graham D. Rowles, professor of geography and behavioral science and associate director of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky. His lecture, "Rural Communities in Transition: Dilemmas in Long-Term Care," will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.

Rowles’s research focuses on the experience of aging in different environmental contexts. He has conducted in-depth ethnographic research of elderly populations in urban, rural, and nursing home environments, exploring the changing relationships between elderly people and their environment as they grow older and the ways these relationships affect health and well-being.

His publications include the book Prisoners of Space? Exploring the Geographical Experience of Older People, as well as numerous book chapters and articles. He has coedited Aging and Milieu: Environmental Perspectives on Growing Old, Qualitative Gerontology, and Long-Term Care for the Rural Elderly.

A fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, Rowles has served as a consultant to several state and federal government agencies, including the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. He has received research funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute on Aging, and the Appalachian Regional Commission. His ongoing research includes a book on aging in Kentucky, a second edition of Qualitative Gerontology, and a longitudinal study of rural long-term care.
