Do you remember when the only way you could tour a college that you wanted to attend was by going there for a visit? Thats not the case anymore. Today, Web sites and videos can help you narrow down college choices right from your home. Many colleges now have sophisticated Internet sites where you can take a virtual campus "walk around." Ithaca College, for instance, shows you a 360-degree view of its quad. You can also check out class descriptions [and] faculty bios."
Preventions Fat to Firm at 40+ Plan is based on a new way to work out, called cardio-resistance training. It combines the calorie-burning power of aerobic exercise with the muscle-building effects of strength training. "Exercising this way keeps your heart rate up to an aerobic workout level throughout your strength training," explains Gary A. Sforzo, Ph.D., chairperson of the graduate program in exercise and sport sciences at Ithaca College in New York, whos studied cardio-resistance training. "That means you achieve the cardiovascular benefit of an endurance, or aerobic, program, and gain lean muscle as with traditional weight training. Its also easier to stick with, because youre done with both in half the time."
Colleges and universities love retirees, and the feelings are mutual. These days, retirement communities near college campuses are popular with seniors seeking a rich variety of cultural and educational opportunities and a chance to rub shoulders with students both young and old. Longview is a nonprofit rental community that provides assisted living and additional care on a fee-for-service basis. Its close to Ithaca College and Cornell. Students often intern at Longview, and the colleges Gerontology Institute offers residents a chance to stay abreast of aging issues.
Howard Cogan was presented with the American Advertising Federations 1999 Distinguished Advertising Educator Award June 18 during the American Advertising Conference in Washington, D.C. Cogan, who recently retired as associate professor in the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, helped found the schools chapters of the AAF and the Public Relations Society of America and also served as their professional adviser. His AAF student chapter, called AdLab, has won the National Student Advertising Competition at the regional level five times, and in 1993 won first place nationally for its Saturn automobile campaign. Thomas Bohn, dean of the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, says, "If we could clone a thousand Howard Cogans, we could clearly change the face of not only advertising education but higher education as well."
