AIDS Quilt Will Be Displayed in November
One
hundred and twenty-eight panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt
will be on display in the Emerson Suites November 1518.
The name of a person who has died of AIDS has been sewn into
each 3-by-6-foot panel by friends and loved ones. The panels
have then been sewn into sections, 16 of which will be displayed
at the College. Members of the public are invited to walk quietly
among the panels and reflect on the lives of people who have
died of AIDS.
The exhibit will open on Monday,
November 15, at 7:00 p.m. with a ceremonial unfolding of the
quilt. There will also be speakers and a reception. The quilt
will be displayed on Tuesday, November 16, and Wednesday, November
17, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and on Thursday, November 18,
from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a closing ceremony at 7:00
p.m.
Classes and groups planning to visit the exhibit may arrange
for a talk given by a trained facilitator at the display site.
These talks can be tailored to suit the needs of the group and
can be given both before and after viewing the quilt. Classes
and groups can sign up for facilitators through November 8. All
events are free and open to the public.
Begun in San Francisco in 1987
by the NAMES Project Foundation, the AIDS
Memorial Quilt is a way to increase public awareness of AIDS
and provide a creative means for remembrance and healing. Some
12 million people have visited the quilt in thousands of displays
worldwide. The quilt currently has 42,960 panels.
The display at Ithaca College is being sponsored by the AIDS
Working Group of Ithaca College and the Names Project of Syracuse.
This is the second consecutive year the quilt has visited the
College. Last year some 1,100 people signed the guest book.
