Handwerker Gallery to Show Historic Photos from C. Hadley Smith Collection
All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. Located on the ground floor of the Caroline Werner Gannett Center, the gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. (Thursday until 9:00 p.m.); Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 2:00–6:00 p.m. The gallery is closed when the College is not in session. C. Hadley Smith set up shop as a professional photographer in Ithaca in 1947. Over the next five decades his work appeared in newspapers throughout upstate New York as well as in Life, Look, Newsweek, and Time. He photographed the likes of Harry Truman, Martin Luther King, Dwight Eisenhower, Linus Pauling, Count Basie, Roberta Peters, and Wilt Chamberlain; he also spent the better part of 30 years taking shots of major events and everyday activities at Ithaca College. The photos in Imaging Ithaca College, selected from some 250,000 images Smith took and later donated to the College archives, date from 1950 to 1975. They are grouped into six themes: aerials, the Ithaca College art museum, athletics, the downtown campus, people, and the South Hill campus. Imaging Ithaca College was organized with the help of Bridget Bower, College archivist, and Paul Smith, director of audio-video services. The exhibit also includes Paul Smith’s 1999 video A Conversation with C. Hadley Smith. For more information call the gallery at 274-3018 or contact Jelena Stojanovic, gallery director, at 274-3548. |
