Handwerker Gallery Presents Four Part Global Video Series

Still frame from Host, a video work by Kristin LucasA four-part exhibit of 21 video works by nearly 20 female video artists, Young and Restless, will be screened in the Handwerker Gallery from Tuesday to Friday, February 22 to 25. A different program, lasting about an hour, will be shown each day beginning at 5:00 p.m. The screenings, the fifth presentation in the gallery’s Global Video Series, are free and open to the public.

The video works in Young and Restless were made between 1993 and 1997 and showcase artists engaged in explorations of female social and sexual identity. The works generally last between 3 and 8 minutes, with some running as long as 14 and 15 minutes. Alex Bag’s Untitled Fall, by far the longest at 57 minutes, constitutes part four of the exhibit. Most of the works center on the videographer, who often performs in front of the camera.

for example, in Kristin Lucas’s Host, an eight-minute color video made in 1997, the artist participates in an on-line therapy session directed by the system operator of a streetside multimedia kiosk. As the videographer carries out a virtual conversation about a troublesome relationship, the kiosk, which looks something like an ATM machine, starts displaying images from daytime television and other pop-culture media, leaving the artist to work out her aggression toward technical control.

For more information visit the Electronic Arts Intermix Web site at www.eai.org, call the gallery at 274-3018, or contact gallery director Jelena Stojanovic at 274-3548.
