IC Theatre Presents ‘Beyond Words’

Ithaca College Theatre continues its spring season with Beyond Words: A Celebration of Dance. This riveting exposition of tap, ballet, modern, ballroom, and jazz dancing will be presented at preview performances on Tuesday, March 28, and Wednesday, March 29, at 8:00 p.m. in the Hoerner Theatre. Regular evening performances will run from Thursday, March 30, to Saturday, April 1, at 8:00. In addition, there will be a matinee performance on April 1 at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are on sale at the Ithaca College box office, with prices ranging from $3.50 to $9.00. The box office is open from noon to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. For reservations and more information call 274-3224.

Beyond Words consists of seven pieces choreographed by four faculty members from the Department of Theatre Arts: Stacey Cohn (jazz and tap), Nancy Gaspar (ballroom), Jean McGregor (modern), and Eugenia Wacker-Hoeflin (ballet). The recorded music accompanying these performances includes works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff as well as hits by Frank Sinatra, Mario Lanza, April Stevens, and the Beastie Boys.

The 34 student dancers also represent a variety of backgrounds and interests. Drawn from each of the College’s five schools, they are majoring not only in drama and theater arts but also in occupational therapy, accounting, vocal performance, Spanish, physical therapy, journalism, and mathematics-physics. What unites them is the vision of legendary dance teacher and innovator Doris Humphrey: "The dancer believes that his art has something to say that cannot be expressed in words or in any other way than dancing. There are times when the simple dignity of movement can fulfill the function of a volume of words."

The artistic team for Beyond Words includes scenic designer Alice Golden ’00; sound designer Jacob Hall ’02; lighting designers Brad M. Gyorgak ’00 and Timothy McEvoy ’01; and costume designers Michael Mandel ’00, Shana Skop ’00, Diana Constantinides ’01, and staff member Kevin Wolfgang.

The technical director for this production is Gordon Strain ’00, Alison Harma ’00 is the stage manager, and Michael Mandel ’00 is the dramaturge.
