Israeli Diplomat to Give Talk

Ambassador Shmuel Sisso, the consul general of Israel in New York City, will speak on "Present Problems and Future Trends in Israel" at Ithaca College on Thursday, April 13. The 8:00 p.m. talk in Muller Chapel is sponsored by the student organization Friends of Israel as the culmination of Celebration Israel. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception.

Sisso greeting Israeli president Barak"It is exciting to have such a distinguished representative of Israel come to visit Ithaca College," says Michael Faber, Jewish chaplain and adviser to Friends of Israel. "He is an important figure in Israeli politics and is sure to offer something special to the community as a whole."

As consul general based in New York City since 1997, Sisso focuses on developing and improving relationships between the state of Israel and various religious and ethnic populations — primarily the Hispanic, African American, and other communities in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut tristate area.

Sisso began his political career in 1978 as a city councilman for his hometown of Kiryat Yam. In 1989 he was elected mayor, and in 1993 he was reelected with 81 percent of the vote. Sisso oversaw several large-scale municipal projects as mayor, including the building of 3,000 new housing units and the establishment of a technical college.

In addition to holding elective office, Sisso has been an important player in the development of Israeli domestic policy as a member of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Committee on Social Policy, the National Council for the Prevention of Road Accidents, and the Association for the Promotion of Secondary Education. His efforts have earned him a variety of honors, including the Environment Ministry’s national prize and an Education Ministry award for increasing the rate of graduation from high school.
