President Williams Elected to ACE Board of Directors

Peggy R. WilliamsPresident Peggy R. Williams has been elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, an organization representing some 1,600 of the nation’s colleges and universities and nearly 200 national and regional higher education associations and organizations. Her term runs through February of 2003.

ACE works to coordinate the interests of all sectors of higher education into a single voice on issues of national policy. It operates a number of programs designed to increase access to postsecondary education, promote equity, ensure quality education on the nation’s campuses, and train new generations of higher education leaders. As the governing body of ACE, the 38-member board of directors is responsible for overseeing its management and setting the organization’s general policy direction.

Williams was elected to the board at ACE’s 82nd annual meeting, held in Chicago on March 18. A member of its Commission on Governmental Relations since 1998, she previously chaired ACE’s Commission on Women in Higher Education (1992–93). In 1984 she was the first recipient of the Jackie M. Gribbons Leadership Award from the American Council on Education/National Identification Program, which also established in her name the Margaret R. Williams Emerging Professional Award to recognize the accomplishments of young female professionals in higher education and their potential for contributions to the profession.
