Ithaca Students on Capitol HillTwo Ithaca College students showed off their research projects to an important audience on April 6 — the United States Congress. Wendy Clement ’02 and Quentin Machingo ’00 were among the 60 students nationwide selected to take part in a poster session designed to demonstrate to members of Congress the high quality of research conducted by undergraduates in a variety of disciplines. Clement collaborated with assistant professor of biology Susan Swensen on her project "Cladistic Analysis: The Phylogenetic Approach to Understanding Evolution in Plants," while Machingo worked with professor of biology Vicki Cameron on "Novel Mutations in a Subunit of Cytochrome c Oxidase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae." Also on hand for the session were representatives from the federal agencies that fund such research, including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, NASA, and the Departments of Energy and Agriculture.
