105th Commencement Slated for May 13
The academic procession will form at 10:00 a.m., with the ceremony at Butterfield Stadium beginning at 11:00. President Williams is encouraging members of the faculty to take part in the event. "As the class of 2000 leaves South Hill, they will carry with them the knowledge and understanding that you so expertly encouraged," she wrote in an invitation to faculty. "You may take pride in knowing that this very special gift you have given our students will extend throughout their lives, and your influence will be realized in the contributions our graduates make within the greater society for many years. Please join the class of 2000, their families and friends, and the rest of our College community as we celebrate our students’ achievements." To help with the planning of the event, those who wish to march in the procession are asked to notify the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs by May 1. Winkler, who holds an M.F.A. degree from the Yale School of Drama, earned two Golden Globe Awards and three Emmy Award nominations for his portrayal of Arthur Fonzarelli — "the Fonz" — on the long-running television comedy Happy Days. He has also had an active career behind the camera as a producer and director of television programs dealing with children’s issues, including the documentary Who Are the DeBolts and Where Did They Get 19 Kids?, which won both an Emmy Award and the Humanitas Prize. Winkler is a founding member of the Children’s Action Network, an organization of entertainment industry leaders dedicated to raising the profile of children’s issues through the media. He has also held leadership roles with the Epilepsy Foundation of America, Toys for Tots, the National Committee for Arts for the Handicapped, and United Friends of the Children, among other organizations.
