Frederick Douglass Academy, Ithaca College, and All that Jazz

Jazz at the FDAMusic professor Steve Brown and his Ithaca College Jazz Workshop met with the jazz band from Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Academy on April 8 for a three-hour instruction session in the Nabenhauer Recital Room. The visiting musicians were on campus April 7–9 to participate in private and group instruction provided by Ithaca College faculty and students. In addition to the music lessons and various campus tours, the FDA musicians had a chance to hear their conductor, Nathanial Dixon, perform a guest solo at the jazz workshop’s April 7 concert in Ford Hall.

Once closed because of poor student performance, the Frederick Douglass Academy is now acclaimed nationwide for its devotion to academic rigor and student achievement. The partnership between the College and the academy was formed in 1998 to enhance the educational opportunities at both institutions.
