Three Students Win Regional Theater Awards

Three Ithaca College seniors won awards at the Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival regional competition in January, and two of them will be competing at the national level later this month.

BarbizonJennette Kollmann and Gordon Strain received the Barbizon Award for Theatrical Design Excellence for lighting and scene designs, respectively. Their work was part of the College’s production of Eric Overmyer’s Dark Rapture. Designs submitted for the Barbizon awards were judged on the basis of quality, effectiveness, originality, and excellence. Entries from all over New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia were judged. As regional winners, Kollman and Strain are now eligible to compete in the national festival, to be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Dark Rapture setIn addition, Shana Skop, who designed the costumes for Dark Rapture, was recognized for costume design excellence. This honor goes to a student whose work has outstanding design merit as determined by adjudicators who have attended the performance. There is no national competition for this award.

Sponsored by the Kennedy Center, the regional festival is intended to recognize the variety and breadth of talent that exist in college and university theater programs. There are eight regional festivals, which encompass about 1,000 colleges and universities.

Kollman is majoring in theatrical production arts with a concentration in theater technology. While studying at the Ithaca College London Center, she held internships in lighting design at the Pentameters Theatre and Vari-Lite Productions. She has also trained as a stage technician at Walt Disney World.

Skop is majoring in theatrical production arts with a concentration in theater design. In addition to her work on College productions, she has been on the wardrobe crew for the Lincoln Center Festival and Long Island’s Gateway Playhouse.

Strain, a theatrical production arts major with a concentration in theater technology, is minoring in art history. He has worked on campus productions in a number of capacities, including scenic designer, technical director, master electrician, master carpenter, and special effects designer.
