Ithaca College to Host Conference on Women’s Health Issues

A daylong conference of lectures and workshops, "Women Aging Wisely," will be offered on Friday, May 19, in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall. Speakers and presenters from a variety of disciplines will address health conditions and diseases common to older women as well as traditional and alternative treatment options and lifestyle changes that contribute to lifelong wellness. This information will be valuable to professionals in the field of aging, those who care for older women, and any woman who wants to age wisely.

The registration fee for the full-day conference is $50, which includes the morning and afternoon sessions, light refreshments, and lunch. The half-day fee, which includes a choice of morning or afternoon session, along with lunch and refreshments, is $30. The half-day fee with refreshments only is $25.

Enrollment is limited, and registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration deadline is Friday, May 12. Concurrent sessions scheduled for the day will focus on topics such as

  • hormone replacement therapy
  • the role of antioxidants in women’s health
  • prevention and treatment of cancer
  • nutritional needs
  • aging issues of rural women
  • coronary heart disease
  • alternative therapies in later life
  • exercise strategies

Joan LeimanThe keynote address, "Women Aging Wisely: Knowledge Is Power," will be delivered by Joan Leiman, the executive deputy vice president for the health sciences and a clinical professor of public health at Columbia University. Joan Dacher, assistant professor at the Sage Graduate School in Troy, New York, will also give a talk — "Diversity among Older Women: Assuring That All Can Age Wisely."

The conference is being sponsored by the Gerontology Institute, the Division of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, and the Decker School of Nursing at the State University of New York at Binghamton.

The Women’s International Pharmacy provided partial funding for the event. Included among the cooperating agencies are the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance, the Ithaca College Departments of Exercise and Sport Sciences, Health Promotion and Human Movement, and Sociology, and the women’s studies program. Other cooperating agencies are Planned Parenthood of Tompkins County, the Tompkins County Health Department and Office for the Aging, the Trumansburg Family Health Center, and the Wells College Department of Biology.
