Joy Adams, art, featured her paintings this spring in a show at the Littlestone Gallery on Taughannock Boulevard in Ithaca.

Barney Beins, psychology, gave two invited presentations at the 12th Southeastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology in Atlanta.

Three students received awards at the Eastern Colleges Science Conference in April: Wendy Clement ’02 for outstanding oral presentation in biology, Nate Ross ’02 for outstanding oral presentation in microbiology, and Kristen Sager ’01 for outstanding poster presentation in physiology.

Howard Erlich, dean, School of Humanities and Sciences, has been elected to the 14-member board of directors of the American Conference of Academic Deans for the academic year 2000–2001. With a membership of over 400 deans, ACAD works with the Association of American Colleges and Universities to offer professional support to academic leaders.

ICTV produced three programs that were judged best in their categories in the annual Time Warner Pegasys local cable access competition. Playhouse Ithaca: Laundry and Bourbon was awarded best arts event, The Gumdrop Shop won in the magazine category, and Tracy Malis was named both best variety and best educational access program.

Elaine Leeder, sociology, is one of 16 scholars chosen from throughout the nation to participate in the United States Holocaust Museum Summer Seminar for College Professors. The program provides training in the teaching of Holocaust-related courses.

Katharyn Howd Machan, writing, and Bridget Meeds ’91 presented a day of poetry and dance activities for adults and children at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts last March. The presentation included lectures and exercises on poetry writing, poetry readings, and a program of storytelling, dance, and drama.

Several works by Harry McCue, art, were featured in Man’s Best Friend, an exhibit at the Upstairs Gallery in Ithaca.

Carrie Phillips ’00 won the Brooks Award for best student presentation at the regional meeting of Beta Beta Beta, a national honor society for undergraduate biology students. The meeting was held in March at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. She worked with Susan Allen-Gil, biology, to study the effects of habitat loss on the reproductive success of freshwater fish. Funding from the award will allow Phillips to present her research at Beta Beta Beta’s national meeting in Puerto Rico later in June.

Sharon Policello, first-year programs, has coauthored a book chapter, "The Institutional Context: Student Government as a Part of Institutional Governance," in Advising Student Governments: Models for Practice and Strategies for Success. The book was published in January by the National Association for Campus Activities Educational Foundation.

Matthew Schultz ’00 has been chosen for membership in the Association of Alumni and Friends of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls.

Fred Thomas, campus safety, was named Frank Hammer officer of the month for April by the Kiwanis Club of Ithaca. Cited as a role model for community policing, he was commended for his fair and consistent way of handling situations and for his educational approach to law enforcement.

Dan Tillapaugh ’01 received the Choice Award for student of the year, given by the Northeast Association of College and University Residence Halls at that group’s March conference.

Norman Wall, campus safety, graduated from the FBI National Academy Program in March. The program provides 11 weeks of advanced investigative, management, and fitness training for law enforcement officers who have proven records as professionals within their agencies.

Mark Warfle, physical plant, was this year’s recipient of the Fred W. Singer Fire Instructor of the Year Award. Given by the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, the award recognizes professionalism, excellence, and enthusiasm in fire service training. A state-certified fire safety instructor, Warfle is also a volunteer with the Owego Fire Department.

Susan Weisend, art, recently featured her work in two group shows, Prints: Four Artists at the Upstairs Gallery in Ithaca and Transferred Sensibilities: Eight Artists at the Atrium Gallery at Corning Community College.

Anesti Zakos ’01, an art major, recently displayed one of her works in a national juried show called Drawing from Perception III at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. In addition, she has received a grant from the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts and will spend a month this summer at the Saltonstall Arts Colony near Ithaca.
