Bicycle patrol officers from municipal police departments
and campus safety and security offices throughout New York and Canada
came to Ithaca College the week of June 5 to learn how to better
use cycling in law enforcement.
The five-day program included classroom instruction
on such topics as crash analysis, vehicle and traffic laws, and
nutrition and fitness. Officers also took to the streets and parking
lots to learn such basic cycling techniques as negotiating curbs,
stairs, and hazards; night riding; dismounts; and suspect contact
tactics. The officers also took part in distance riding and off-road
riding on local trails. Now in its seventh year at the College,
the police bicycle patrol school is sanctioned by the International
Police Mountain Bike Association, the Law Enforcement Bike Association,
and the Bureau for Municipal Police of the New York State Division
of Criminal Justice Services.
