Kudos

Lee Bailey, philosophy and religion, published an article entitled "A Little Death: The Near-Death Experience and Tibetan Delogs" in the spring 2001 volume of the Journal of Near Death Studies.

Asma Barlas, politics, delivered a paper, "Muslim Women and Sexual Oppression: Reading Liberation from the Quran," at the Macalester International Roundtable at Macalester College last October. The paper will be published in the Macalester International, volume 10, spring 2001. In addition, she wrote a book chapter, "Texts, Sex, and States: A Critique of North African Discourse on Islam," that was published in The Arab-African and Islamic Worlds: Interdisciplinary Studies. Her book, Believing Women: Sex/Gender, Patriarchy, and the Quran, will be published in 2002 by the University of Texas Press.

Richard Creel, philosophy and religion, has published his third book, Thinking Philosophically: An Introduction to Critical Reflection and Rational Dialogue, with Blackwell Publishers. The work is an introduction to philosophy text.

Howard Erlich, School of Humanities and Sciences dean, organized a panel, "Collegiality: An Emerging Issue," at the American Association of Colleges and Universities conference in New Orleans. Panelists, including Diane Schwartz, mathematics and computer science, considered the wisdom of collegiality as an overt criterion for personnel recommendations.
