Brian McAree Named Student Affairs Vice President

McAreePresident Peggy R. Williams has announced the appointment of Brian McAree as vice president for student affairs and campus life. McAree has 24 years of experience in student services and has served since May 2000 as acting vice president.

"Brian brings extensive experience in student affairs and excellent communication skills to this position," says Williams. "His candidacy had very strong support among members of the search committee and across the campus community. I look forward to working with Brian as we move forward in implementing many dimensions of the Ithaca College institutional plan."

As vice president, McAree is responsible for overall leadership of a comprehensive student affairs and campus life program that includes nearly 200 employees in 12 departments: Campus Center and activities, campus safety, career services, chaplains, conference and event services, counseling center, dining services, health center, ID office, intercollegiate athletics, multicultural affairs, and residential life and judicial affairs.

McAree earned a master of arts degree in college student personnel at Bowling Green State University, master of pastoral studies degree at Loyola University, and bachelor of science degree in psychology at the State University of New York College at Cortland. He held student services positions at Rider College, the University of Delaware, and West Liberty State College before joining Ithaca College in 1983 as director of residential life. He was named assistant vice president for student affairs and campus life in 1989 and promoted to associate vice president in 1997.

At Ithaca College McAree has chaired the Bias-Related Incidents Committee, AIDS Education and Policy Committee, and Student Affairs and Campus Life Professional Development Committee, among others. He has served on numerous all-College committees, including the Middle States Accreditation Steering Committee, President’s Advisory Committee, and Strategic Planning Committee. His professional affiliations include the Association of College and University Housing Officers --- International and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. He has given many presentations at national and regional conferences, on such topics as campus safety/legal issues, residential life issues, organizational skills and dynamics, supervision and leadership, dealing effectively with parents, and meeting management.
