Faculty Members to Present Free Recital

Saxophonist Steven Mauk and guitarist Pablo Cohen, two members of the School of Music faculty, will present "Music for Saxophonist and Guitar" on Sunday, September 23, at 4:00 p.m. The free performance will take place in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music and will include duo and solo performances of works by Fauré, Morosco, Mozart, and Piazzolla. This recital marks the first of several planned collaborations between the two performers.

Mauk, a professor of saxophone, has presented numerous solo, chamber music, and concerto performances in this country and abroad, including appearances at Weill Hall in Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. A recording artist with 17 albums to his credit, he is also an eminent scholar and teacher. He has written four books and published numerous articles in the Saxophone Journal, Saxophone Symposium, and Chamber Music Quarterly, among others. Mauk was recently honored with the 2000–2001 Excellence in Teaching Award, given by the College to recognize subject mastery, presentation, and the ability to interact with students.

Cohen, an adjunct associate professor, is also a seasoned performer and instructor. He has participated in solo, ensemble, and orchestral concerts in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. As a featured artist, Cohen performed at the Salle Cortot in Paris, the Ho-Am Hall for Performing Arts in Seoul, Korea, and Carnegie Hall. His transcriptions of Chick Corea’s Children’s Songs, along with his unveiling of solo and ensemble music by Latin American masters such as Radamés Gnattali and Carlos Guastavino, represent an exciting new direction for classical guitar.
