Online Learning to Be Topic of Talk

Samuel Shmikler ’77 --- president of the Periscope Organization, a human performance and consulting firm --- will present "Creating Killer Learning Interactions Online" on Thursday, October 11. The talk, sponsored by the Department of Organizational Communication, Learning, and Design, will take place at 7:00 p.m. in Park Hall Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Shmikler, who graduated with a degree in television-radio, started the Periscope Organization in 1995. The California-based consulting firm works with organizations to develop online learning programs and Internet education strategies. Among the company’s clients are AOL/Netscape, Apple Computer, Cisco Systems, Ernst & Young, Los Alamos National Laboratories, Microsoft, Paine Webber, Personic, Sandia National Laboratories, OCSEA (the Ohio chapter of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees), and the U.S. Navy. Before founding his company, Shmikler held senior training management positions at Sun Microsystems and Sybase.

Shmikler is a member of the International Society for Performance Improvement, the American Society for Training and Development, and the International Federation of Training and Development Organizations. He has been a featured speaker for Influent, ZD-Comdex, and other leading technology-learning organizations. He is frequently quoted in TechWeek, Corporate University Review, and other professional journals. Recently he was selected by the editors of Training and Development as one of the "new guard" of innovators in the world of e-learning.

A member of the Ithaca College Board of Trustees since 1991, Shmikler serves on the Educational Policies and Campus Life Committees. He was instrumental in establishing the Southern California Alumni Club. He has participated in the College’s communications program in Los Angeles and is often a guest speaker at events sponsored by the Roy H. Park School of Communications.
