Alumni Weekend 2007: A Family Affair!

Alumni Weekend isn't just for alumni; it's for families too! Bring the whole family back to IC for Alumni Weekend 2007! Take advantage of all our beautiful campus has to offer. Head to the tennis courts for a quick match or play a game of Frisbee on the quad, then cool off in the outdoor swimming pool. Get pumped in our award-winning Fitness Center, or simply take a stroll on one of the many campus trails. There's still time to register and everyone's invited.

We also have tons of fun family activities planned for the picnic and party on the quad (Saturday, June 2), including a moonbounce, a magician, relay races, and face painting. It's a not-to-be-missed event for kids of all ages!

As time allows, you might consider a trip to downtown Ithaca for food, shopping, or even a visit to the Ithaca Festival, which will be happening the same weekend. You might also choose to "touch, listen, and discover" at the Sciencenter or explore the Museum of the Earth, where one of the nation's largest fossil collections includes dinosaur bones of all shapes and sizes. Or perhaps you'll want to take in some of the stunning views along the trails leading to Buttermilk Falls.

Remember: there's something for everyone at Alumni Weekend 2007. We look forward to seeing you on campus June 1-3!

Human Rights Campaigner to Deliver Commencement Address

From the refugee camps of Darfur to Louisiana's death row, William Schulz has traveled the globe in pursuit of a world free from human rights violations. The former executive director of Amnesty International USA will discuss that elusive endeavor in delivering the main address at Ithaca College's commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 20.

Schulz headed the American section of the world's oldest and largest international human rights organization from 1994 to 2006. Independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest, or religion, Amnesty International undertakes research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination.

"It will be an honor and a privilege to have William Schulz address our graduating seniors and their guests," said President Peggy R. Williams. "He has fought for social justice whenever and wherever he has found it imperiled, using the moral authority of his organization to shine a light on some of the planet's darkest spots."

Schulz is the author of the books In Our Own Best Interest: How Defending Human Rights Benefits Us All and Tainted Legacy: 9/11 and the Ruin of Human Rights. According to the New York Review of Books, he "has done more than anyone in the American human rights movement to make human rights issues known in the United States."

Double Your Money with a Gift to the A&E Center

Thanks to a $4 million challenge grant from the Atlantic Philanthropies last spring, any gift you make to the new athletics and events (A&E) center will be matched dollar for dollar, making your gift worth twice as much.

To date, the College has raised $12.7 million in gifts and commitments toward its $20 million goal for the center. With the Campaign for Ithaca College: Making a World of Difference slated to end this year, the hope is that loyal alumni will rise to the Atlantic Philanthropies' challenge.

"I was not an athlete at Ithaca College," said College trustee Caroleen Feeney '86, who was instrumental in securing the challenge grant from Atlantic Philanthropies. "But I was a great fan and supporter of the sports program, especially football, and I understand that this project is a vitally important investment in the College's future. While it will certainly benefit our student-athletes, its impact will also be felt by the entire campus community."

The College hopes to gain approval from the Town of Ithaca Planning Board sometime during the summer or fall. Site preparation will begin shortly thereafter.
