A Note from the President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors

The alumni association board of directors wishes you a most happy holiday season!

Thanks to your nominations throughout the year, it is our great privilege to select some of our most talented and notable alumni and friends for alumni association awards.

Please join us in congratulating our 2006 award recipients:

David Dresser and Sharon Policello -- James J. Whalen Meritorious Service Award. Dave and Sharon, both recently retired College administrators, gave years of dedicated service to Ithaca: a combined total of 61! Each helped and influenced thousands of IC students.

Donald Alhart '66 and Janathin Miller '71 -- Professional Achievement Award. Don has been reporting the news in Rochester, N.Y., for more than 40 years and is exceptionally active in not-for-profit groups there. Janathin, an internationally recognized engineer and entrepreneur, is founder, president, and chief executive officer of Antin Engineering, the only automatic test equipment engineering firm in the United States owned and operated by a woman.

Donald Culligan '48 -- Lifetime Achievement Award. An award-winning legend in regional athletics, Don served in many prominent athletic administrative positions before turning to a distinguished career in local politics.

The Outstanding Young Alumni Award goes to two alumni from the class of 1996: Kate Aldrich, an internationally renowned mezzo-soprano who has won numerous prizes and appeared in operas opposite such stars as Placido Domingo, and Jennifer Barefoot, who is the youngest member of the national and international boards of Planned Parenthood and who has dedicated her career to helping organizations think strategically about the message they convey.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating these remarkable alumni and friends at the award ceremony on June 3, 2006, during Alumni Weekend.

Recent Class Notes
Please note that the following class notes are as submitted by alumni and have not been edited for grammar or style.

Jeffrey Cheen (1967, School of Communications) writes, "I have just received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Music Awards. After 40 yrs in the music biz, I'm still active and have just opened a new office in the UK, as well as my office in Beijing and home base in Beverly Hills."

Laura (Rosenthal) Dankner (1967, School of Music) writes, "After 26 years in New Orleans, my husband, composer Steve Dankner, and I have moved to Williamstown, MA. We first lived here after our marriage over 30 years ago, and bought a condo five years ago. As academics, we were only able to spend summers in MA. But following Katrina, we decided to make this our permanent home. I'm immediate Past President of the Music Library Association and Associate Professor, Emeritus, Loyola University, New Orleans. I now teach music appreciation totally online for Southeastern Louisiana University. Isn't the e-life wonderful? Living here in the beautiful Berkshires and still teaching in Louisiana. We're grateful to have escaped Katrina unscathed. Best to all my music buddies from the 60s. Maybe see you at the 2007 reunion?"

Christine (O'Connor) O'Connor-Spear ((1974, School of HPER) writes, "Had the extreme pleasure of accompanying my daughter and her two friends as we made the 6 hour trek from Maine to attend IC's Admission Open House. They loved the college and I couldn't believe how much has been added since I was last there in 1977. I was so astounded by what I saw and proud that I could brag I was an alumna of this gorgeous college. We loved our visit."

Craig Evans (1984, School of Music) writes that he was recently named to the 2006 edition of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education. He was also elected to a seat on the Ithaca City School District Board of Education last May, and he continues as Ithaca College's Director of Individual Giving.

Kristine (Martin) Simmons (1995, M.S. 1996, School of HSHP) and Nathan Simmons (1996, School of H&S) are proud to announce the birth of a baby girl, Ella Ruth. She was born on May 15, 2005 in Hackettstown, NJ, and weighed 9 lb., 10 oz. Ella and her big brother, Luke Martin (2 1/2 years old), are doing great!

Daniel "Snook" Mason (1998, School of Communications) writes that he is the President and Chief Avid Editor at the 44 Dawgs Corp., a Los Angeles-based film production and post production company which he started in 1999. Snook works alongside IC grads Scott Kelley '99 and Adin Michelen '00. 44 Dawgs regularly employs interns from the IC Los Angeles program. The company specializes in feature films, music videos and commercials. Visit 44 Dawgs online at www.44dawgs.com and check out one of their award winning projects at www.contractofevil.com.

Robert Bluey (2001, School of Communications) writes, "More than 30 alumni from the Washington, D.C., area attended a Cortaca Jug party at the Crystal City Sports Pub in Arlington, Va., on Saturday, Nov. 12. Although the Bombers lost the game, the spirit was high for the live ICTV webcast, which was shown on a projection screen at the bar. Washington Semester Program Director Thomas Bohn and a student from the Washington Semester Program also attended. Maureen Devine '03, the alumni club's coordinator, organized the event."

Sarah (Brown) Seymore (2004, School of Business) writes, "I was promoted to E-5, SGT, on October 19, 2005. ICQ Alumni Spotlight: Paul McCabe '04

Keep an eye on Paul McCabe '04, who has penned just one play (so far) -- but it's a national-prize winner.

by Kimberlyn David '06

Paul McCabe '04 has accomplished what most new playwrights, as they collect stacks of rejection slips during years of solitary toil, can only dream of: instant success. Paul's first play, Get Off, not only made its way to the "must read" pile of dramatists around the country, it has already received the prestigious Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award and been featured at the country's "national theater."
