Ithaca Heads for Warmer Weather

The Campaign for Ithaca College: Making a World of Difference made its Sunshine State debut in mid-January with two events in Weston/Fort Lauderdale and Tampa.

Weston Hills Country ClubAbout 35 alumni, parents of students, and friends of the College attended the event held January 16 at the Weston Country Club. Dianne Lynch, dean of the Roy H. Park School of Communications, premiered the DVD A World of Difference: Five Stories from South Hill and outlined the objectives of the largest campaign in Ithaca College history.

Florida AquariumThe following evening, Ithaca hosted another 40 people at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. Guests mingled and tasted hors d'oeuvres while surrounded by enormous tanks filled with various species of fish, including sharks, and other aquatic animals. The Five Stories DVD made its Tampa debut, and Dean Lynch and Bill Haines, chair emeritus of the Ithaca College Board of Trustees and a member of the board's campaign committee, spoke to the crowd.

To date, Ithaca has raised $95.3 million toward its campaign goal of $115 million. For more information about the campaign, please visit www.ithaca.edu/campaign. Giving to Ithaca Soars to New Highs in Fiscal Year 2006

An ever-widening circle of alumni, parents, and friends participated in a surge of charitable giving that brought important support to Ithaca College during the most recent fiscal year, according to findings released in a new gift report, available at www.ithaca.edu/donorreport.

During the fiscal year that ended May 31, 2006, annual gifts to the College reached an all-time high and established records for dollars raised and number of donors. This exceptional effort provides compelling evidence that a spirit of philanthropy continues to grow among Ithaca's community.

ICQ Alumni Spotlight: Elizabeth Conklin-Ballester '00

Elizabeth Conklin-Ballester '00 went on a "yearlong" service trip to the Dominican Republic after graduation. She's still there.

"This wasn't exactly the plan," admits Elizabeth Conklin-Ballester '00. "My plan was to come and volunteer [in the Dominican Republic] for a year. But I met the love of my life and have gotten the opportunity to be involved in really interesting development work in public health and education." The best-laid plans sometimes go awry, but Elizabeth, who graduated from Ithaca College with a degree in health education, isn't feeling the slightest bit disappointed. Just the opposite, in fact.

In early January Gino Bona, a 1995 Ithaca graduate, won the NFL's inaugural "Pitch Us Your Idea for the Best Super Bowl Commercial Ever. Seriously" contest. Bona's winning pitch was made into a 30-second commercial that aired during the Super Bowl XLI broadcast on February 4.

Bona traveled to Los Angeles in late January to watch his idea being filmed by award-winning commercial director Joe Pytka. Bona and a guest also received complimentary tickets to Super Bowl XLI in Miami.
