A Note from the Director of Alumni Relations

The Office of Alumni Relations is ringing in the new year with plans for exciting new events across the country as well as programs that have become traditions. Network Nights, now in their 18th year and held in five major cities, recently brought more than 400 students and alumni together to share work experiences and opportunities. By year's end we hope to see 2,000 alumni actively engaged with Ithaca -- attending events, helping recruit students, offering career advice, assisting with fund-raising, or bringing alumni together. Make reconnecting with Ithaca College your New Year's resolution! For more information visit http://www.ithaca.edu/alumni/assoc_volunteer.php

Happy New Year and enjoy this issue of yourIthaca.

Jack Eaton (1953)
Jack L. Eaton (1953, School of Music) writes, "A chance meeting in Ithaca: My wife and I were in Ithaca caring for two of our grandchildren while their parents were on a business trip to San Francisco. One day while the children were at school we made a trip to the Commons (downtown Ithaca's shopping area on a closed section of State St.). I was in a bookstore there and noticed a couple of familiar faces: Frank and Charlotte (Tayntor) Battisti!!! We chatted for quite a while about our days at IC and more recent happenings. Frank was in town serving as a guest conductor for the IC bands. In addition, I was able to attend a concert in a church downtown given by the IC Madrigals and Choir. Excellent!!!! Reminds me of my days in the IC Choir and the Christmas programs we presented."

Paul Yorkis (1967)
Paul Yorkis (1967, School of H&S) is president of Patriot Real Estate, Inc., located in Medway, MA. "After many years working in higher education, I entered the real estate industry in 1991 and started my own firm, Patriot Real Estate, in 2000. I recently purchased and renovated a building in Medway that serves as our 'world headquarters.' I married Kathleen Courtright in 1969 on the Ithaca College campus, and we have two adult children, who also live in Medway."

Ivy (Castle) Bailey (1978)
Ivy (Castle) Bailey (1978, School of Communications) writes, "I have been married to Jesse for 22 years and have two children: Elise, 17, and Nathan, 15. We own a commercial real estate company in upstate New York that involves properties from Buffalo to New York City. My daughter is a senior in high school and has applied to Ithaca and would like to attend in fall 2004. She has heard great things about IC over the years and looks forward to her next four years at Ithaca."

Lisa (Poissant) Edwards (1985)
Lisa (Poissant) Edwards (1985, School of Communications) writes, "After nearly 18 years at CNN, I took advantage of an executive buyout and 'retired' to be a stay-at-home mom! My daughter Shelby is now 9 and my son Trey is 7, and I'm carpooling all the time! I'm blessed with a wonderful husband, Wayne, who is also a great dad. And besides all the kids' activities, I'm working from home as a curriculum editor."

Michael Keitz and Amy (Navon) Keitz (1992)
Michael Keitz (1992, School of Communications) and Amy (Navon) Keitz (1992) are proud to announce the birth of a baby girl, Rebecca Avery. She was born on October 3, 2003, in Huntingdon Valley, PA, and weighed 7 lb., 13 oz. Big sister Sascha and Michael and Amy are very happy to welcome Rebecca Avery, named in honor of Michael's grandmother Rose Keitz and grandfather Abraham Zucker.

Michael Mandel (2000)
Michael Mandel (2000, School of H&S) writes, "I'm putting my theater training to use playing Lord Alfred Douglas in a production of Moises Kaufman's Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde at a new theater here in Tucson. By day, I'm a mild-mannered community educator at the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault, working to end violence against women, children, and men once and for all. (Does that sound pretentious?)"

ICQ Alumni Spotlight: Fred Schwam '88

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. But it turns out he's a Jewish guy whose workshop is in the Bronx.

Almost as much as St. Nick himself, Fred Schwam '88 is responsible for bringing Christmas cheer to people in and around the five boroughs of New York City. His company, American Christmas Decorations, is the region's leading holiday decorating enterprise. Focusing solely on the yuletide season, the firm is responsible for designing, creating, and installing some of the city's most famous holiday displays. Bloomingdales, Macy's, Lord and Taylor, and Madison Square Garden are among its high-profile clients.
