Closing In on the Home Stretch

It seems like only yesterday that Ithaca College announced the public launch of its largest-ever comprehensive campaign, but in fact we've now entered the campaign's final six months.

It's been an amazing ride so far, with campaign events held across the country and thousands of IC alumni, parents, and friends stepping forward to make whatever contribution they can -- from donated time and energy to gifts that range from one to seven figures.

Even so, we're counting on you to help bring us the rest of the way. If you'd like to be part of this incredible institutional transformation, please make your gift today. Together, we can make a world of difference for generations of IC students.

The campaign will fund new academic programs, scholarship aid, a new School of Business building, an athletics and events center, improved student residence halls, and continuing support of the Ithaca Fund. For more information, visit the campaign website.

What a great excuse to come back to campus! Friday night get revved up for the big game at the pep rally and bonfire. We'll also celebrate the class of 2008 and the induction of new members into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame.

On Saturday root for the Bombers as they take on the Norwich Cadets. Don't forget to stop by the alumni tent for fun and prizes: who knows, you may walk away with a new snowboard or mountain bike! Then laugh the night away with professional stand-up comedians Michael Capozzola '92, Margot Leitman '00, and Giulia Rozzi '00 at the alumni comedy show in IC Square.

The Difference a Good Teacher Can Make

Retired air force colonel Arnald Gabriel '50, HDRMU '89, grew up in Cortland, New York, a child of Italian immigrants. "I learned to speak Italian before I spoke English," he says.

The family bought an Italian grocery store for back taxes, but times were still tough. During the Depression, Gabriel remembers the entire family sharing a can of beans for dinner. "We didn't know we were poor, because everybody was in those days."

Gabriel grew up listening to Saturday broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera on the radio. "My dad loved music," he recalls. "He wanted me to be another Enrico Caruso, but of course I have the world's worst voice."

Instead, in junior high school Gabriel began playing the flute. In high school he studied under band director Burton Stanley '35, M.S '52, who recognized Gabriel's talent and offered to give him private flute lessons for free. Many years later, when Gabriel established the Burton Stanley '35, M.S. '52, Endowed Scholarship at Ithaca College in his teacher's honor, Stanley would respond with characteristic humility, saying he would have offered extra instruction to any of his students.
