Part of the excitement of being a college student is being surrounded 24 hours a day with people who are actively learning and growing. In 2001, a jump in enrollment stressed existing housing facilities to the limit; some students were being temporarily housed in residence hall lounges and others were housed as the third student in rooms designed to accommodate two. Ithaca hired the Sasaki Associates architectural firm to perform a major study of campus facilities and project future needs. The result in 2002 was a Campus Master Plan that called for, among other things, housing for an additional 600 students.
Ithaca entered into a long-term agreement to use the Circle Apartments, adjacent to campus on Danby Road. As part of the contract, the existing apartments were renovated and nine buildings were added to house approximately 700 students. Without the burden and cost of new construction, our goal of $34 million for this objective was met.
