Supporting Ithaca: A Tradition of Athletic Opportunity

“We have more athletics opportunities at IC than many other schools,” says Emma Steurer ’07. “And I don’t think the College gets enough credit for that.” More than half the students at Ithaca participate in athletics. Some play on Intercollegiate teams, some play intramurals, and others, like Emma, play on club teams.

Club sports – Women’s Volleyball

“I joined the women’s volleyball team as a junior, and served as president of the team in my senior year.”

An Athletic Culture:

“I wonder if folks outside of South Hill know how many athletics opportunities there are here, and how important they are to students. For example, when we recruit for volleyball, there’s no need to do any promotion. Word just flies around, especially among the younger students. There is no shortage of interested players!”

On and Off the Field:

“Club sports are unique because students are responsible for practically everything. We organize, recruit, coach, set up the schedule, arrange the travel, play the games  – everything. We also raise a lot of the team budget ourselves. It’s also a learning experience.”

Why Do It?

“It’s not a question of why, but why not. Playing sports at Ithaca was a must for me. I could not imagine going to college without them.”

Personal Comment:

“When it comes to the College providing support for athletics, varsity teams are at the top of the list – which is the way it needs to be. That's okay because improvements to athletic facilities trickle down. The new A&E center may directly affect only a few varsity teams, but the result will free up resources elsewhere on campus that will benefit many more students.”

Varsity athletics are just a part of student athletics at IC. For more on athletic alternatives, see Gifts to Athletics Reach Beyond Varsity.
