History of Funded Proposals (PDF)

The Environmental Studies Program at Ithaca College and EcoVillage at Ithaca (EVI) have entered a long-term partnership for fostering education and research using EcoVillage as a "living laboratory."  As a model of a sustainable community, EVI provides experiential learning opportunities for college students while engaging in community outreach programs. The partnership involves a focused curriculum consisting of courses and the opportunity for ongoing research projects, independent studies, and residential experiences.

NEW!!  PSE has developed Sustainability-Based Learning Objectives.  We hope these are helpful to anyone teaching courses that incorporate elements of sustainability.  You can also find the file in the Documents section of this web page.

2009 SUSTAINABILITY MINI-GRANTS - Due date April 3, 2009!!

Incorporating Sustainability into the Curriculum:

Summer Grants Curriculum Development Proposals

To all interested faculty and staff:

The I.C. Coordinating Team for the Ithaca College-EcoVillage at Ithaca Partnership for Sustainability solicits applications for curriculum development initiatives in the area of sustainability, including the 'people' element of the 'people/planet/prosperity' intersection. The $1,000 curriculum development mini-grants will support work conducted during the summer and fall. A maximum of five mini-grants will be awarded.

This academic year, we encourage applications from the Arts, Music, and Communication.  We especially seek a commissioned piece of art, a musical score, photographic work, or a film that could be shown on campus.  On-line courses or module development are also given preference.

In the past, we have funded proposals to teach new courses, develop new components of existing courses, and revise existing courses to deal with issues relating to sustainability. Proposals have been funded for faculty in Anthropology, Politics, Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Services, Art History, Health Promotion and Physical Education, Math, Women’s Studies, Writing, Biology, Physics, Economics, and Environmental Studies.

Some examples of past mini-grant projects include:

  • Investigating Green Building Across Cultures (Art History)
  • Psychology of Sustainability (Psychology)
  • Going Global: Incorporating Sustainability into Study Abroad Programs (OIP)
  • Women & Sustainability (Women’s Studies)
  • Examining the World through Evolutionary Biology (Biology)
  • History of the Future (History)
  • Integration of Sustainability & Environmental Content into “Poetics” (Writing)
  • Emphasizing Sustainable Health & Wellness (Health Promotion and Physical Education)
  • Incorporating Sustainability into Foundations of Outdoor Adventure Pursuits (Therapeutic Recreation & Leisure Services)

Requirements for the Award:

  1. Curricular Development Proposal.  Proposal guidelines and forms can be found at:  www.ithaca.edu/icpse/docs/minigrant_process/
  2. Attendance at the Finger Lakes Project.  This workshop will provide additional background on integrating sustainability into courses and will bring in local, national and international experts to discuss education for sustainability.  Lunch is included.  More information on the Finger Lakes Project workshops can be found at: www.ithaca.edu/fingerlakes_project

  3. Presentation of your curricular development project at a public venue (e.g. Campus Sustainability Day, Faculty Colloquium, departmental seminar, Brown Bag Seminar, AASHE conference).

Phase II Grants Now Available
