This year the management department began offering an interdisciplinary legal studies minor that has attracted great interest: 15 students from various majors have already enrolled. The new program consists of 18 credit hours and will allow business and non-business majors to develop a greater understanding of the impact of law and legal institutions on society and public policy. Professors Marlene Barken, Eileen Kelly, James Markowitz, and Gwen Seaquist serve as advisers.
Associate professor of accounting Warren Schlesinger was recently informed that his ideas for improving accounting education were incorporated into a new book, Great Ideas for Teaching Introductory Accounting, by SouthWestern Publishing Company.
Associate professor of accounting Patricia A. Libby has coauthored a new textbook with Robert Libby, a professor in Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, and Daniel G. Short, dean of the School of Business at Miami University. Published by Richard D. Irwin, Financial Accounting helps graduate and undergraduate students develop the ability to read and interpret the financial statements of business organizations and understand the system that produces these statements. The book is aimed at two groups of readers: (1) future managers who will interpret and use financial statement information in modern business decision making and (2) future accountants who will prepare financial statements for these managers. Recent calls for change in accounting education have posed new challenges, and this text takes a lead in addressing these concerns.
Donald W. Eckrich, professor of marketing, and Marjorie Epps, instructor of marketing, presented a paper, "A Few Realities about Relationship Marketing: A Survey of Consumer Affairs Professionals," at the 1995 Association of Marketing Educators conference on October 18. The research was supported in part by the College's faculty research grant program and would not have been completed without assistance from Randy Schneider '95 through his independent study in marketing. The paper will be published in the conference proceedings.
Associate professor of management Eileen P. Kelly's article "Methodological Issues in Patient Satisfaction Surveys" will be published in the International Journal of Quality Assurance in Health Care.
Student Honored
Caren Cioffi was recently chosen to attend the Foundation for
Student Communication's Seventh International Conference, held
at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. A senior finance
major with an international business studies minor, she was one
of 200 outstanding students selected from hundreds of applicants
for this honor. Selection was based on demonstrated excellence
in academic and extracurricular leadership. The conference has
two purposes: to complement college education with the more practical
advice and knowledge that real executives can provide and to give
top executives at national corporations the opportunity to understand
Cioffi's generation better.
