Football (5-4)

This fall Coach Mike Welch's troops posted the 25th consecutive winning season in program history. Ithaca's chances at a postseason bid were hurt by a 3-game losing streak early in the year: the Bombers dropped contests to Alfred, Springfield, and American International by a combined total of 5 points.

The club rebounded to take four of its last five outings. The Bombers also retained ownership of the fabled Cortaca Jug with a 35-19 victory in front of a school-record 12,511 fans at Butterfield Stadium.

Ithaca set 8 team and 10 individual offensive records during the campaign. Junior quarterback Neal Weidman passed for 2,125 yards, bettering the previous standard by 829 yards. Junior split end Jeff Higgins hauled in 57 throws. He also emerged as a dynamic return specialist, finishing 2nd among Division III performers in kickoff return average (33.9). Higgins was an honorable-mention all-American on the Hewlett-Packard Division III squad and earned second-team Football Gazette all-American laurels.

Defensive end Scott Connolly was an American Football Coaches Association all-American pick. He tallied a team-best 10 quarterback sacks and had 66 total tackles. Connolly also displayed effective running skills in short yardage situations, carrying for 5 scores.
