John Rosenburg, Young George Washington: The Making of a Hero (Brookfield, Ct.: Millbrook Press, 1997).

"A novel based on fact," this book looks into who and what shaped the first president’s life from age 11 to 27. A member of the class of ’43, the author began his writing career while a student at Ithaca. He has published five other books and lives in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

George C. Monagan, I’m Not Old, I’m Chronologically Gifted (Rochester: Wayland Publishing, 1995).

A collection of poems celebrating well-earned lessons, joys, and ironies of life. The author, a 1949 graduate of Ithaca College, is professor emeritus at Monroe Community College in Rochester.

James J. Whalen, Reflections from the Turtle Bridge (Wilmington, Mass.: Acme Printing, 1997).

"Turtle Bridge" refers to a spot in New Hampshire that, for President Whalen, has come to mean the essence of contemplation and reflection. This book is a selection of his Convocation addresses, arranged under various subject headings. Whether talking about the magic of learning, community commitment, or self-knowledge, Whalen reminds his audience that life is a journey and education has the power to make the trip worthwhile. Proceeds from the book, which is on sale in the College’s bookstore, go to the Turtle Bridge Scholarship Fund.

Barbara Newborn, Return to Ithaca (Rockport, Mass.: Element Books, 1996).

The author was a 21-year-old speech communication graduate set to begin a career in teaching when she was struck down by a severe stroke that left her paralyzed and unable to speak. This book is about her journey to recovery. A 1973 graduate of Ithaca College, she is currently chief of staff at the National Stroke & Quality of Life Medical Education Institute in New York City.
