Three Ithaca College Television programs and one faculty documentary won Pegasys Awards for Access Television Excellence at the 12th annual Time Warner competition. Steve Brown’s Jazz Workshop, a four-camera performance recording in Ford Hall by the crew of the series ICTV Presents, won in the arts event category. Series producer was Jason Hark ’99. The Day Room, a sophisticated half-hour puppet comedy produced in-studio during fall 1996, won the variety category. Bombers Football: Year in Review was a one-hour 1996 season wrap-up produced by Adam Kranitz ’97, Brigid O’Rourke ’98, and David Nadelberg ’97. Park School instructor Gossa Tsegaye ’76 received a documentary award for Fences, a behind-the-scenes look at a Hangar Theatre production.
Jennifer Ohlbaum ’97 (pictured with actor Dan Aykroyd) was one of 30 students selected from all over the country to be an intern at the 1997 convention of the National Association of Television Programming Executives, held in New Orleans in January.
Kimberly Pieters ’97 was honored as one of the American Advertising Federation’s "most promising minority advertising students." In an award ceremony held in March at the 19th Annual College Media Convention in New York City, the Ithacan received a Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for the 1995--96 academic year. Of particular significance is that of the six Gold Crowns presented, five went to well-established, large university dailies.
Associate professor of television-radio Megan Roberts and associate professor of art Raymond Ghirardo have been awarded a $7,000 fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Their fellowship is in the category of performance art/emergent forms from the foundation’s Artists Fellowships Program.
Campus radio station 106-VIC is a finalist in the 6th Annual National Student Radio and TV Programming Award Competition, sponsored by the National Association of College Broadcasters. VIC entered the community service/marketing campaign category with its "1996 Fifty-Hour Marathon." This year’s event took place March 22--24 and raised $2,500 for Hospicare of Tompkins County. Winners will be announced at the NACB’s national conference, to be held November 9 in Providence, Rhode Island.
Diane Gayeski, associate professor of corporate communication, was invited by the president of the International Society for Performance Improvement to make a "Master’s Series" presentation in April at the annual conference. She was one of 12 leaders in the field of training and organizational performance improvement to be featured at the conference. She will also be the keynote speaker at the New York State Trainers Association in Albany in June.
"Unloading Rice Donations" was part of associate professor Janice Levy's photography exhibit The Face of Madagascar. Displayed at the Handwerker Gallery this spring, the exhibit represented a collaboration between her and the people of Madagascar, who shared important parts of their lives and culture. To present the works in a way that would best capture the spirit of the people, she paired Malagasy proverbs with the photographs.
Seventeen Park School seniors spent two days in Manhattan this January for an introduction to the cultures and operations of four communications businesses. Hosting the New York Network Days career sessions were Scott Rome ’92, eastern division manager of Paramount Pictures Domestic Television; Sharon Katz ’91, media manager at digital brand marketing firm Modem Media; Carole Irgang ’86, vice president and group management supervisor at Grey Advertising; and parent Jeffrey Hark, director of production for Fox News Channel.
