MEN’S SWIMMING (10-4)

Ithaca’s winter of pool participation included winning the Rensselaer Invitational, a 4th at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association meet, and a 24th-place tie at the NCAA championship. Sophomore Pat Kielty earned honorable-mention all-American recognition with a 15th-place effort in the 100-yard backstroke (53.0) at the NCAA meet. He also joined with sophomore Scott Pavlick, junior Keith Reece, and freshman Robert Finne to take 10th (1:34.77) in the 200-yard and 11th (3:30.23) in the 400-yard medley relays, both good for honorable-mention all-American laurels.

The 200-yard medley relay grouping broke the school record while touching 2nd at the state meet, turning in a 1:34.61 clocking. At that same event, Pavlick established an Ithaca standard in the 100-yard backstroke (52.59).
Kielty finished with a squad-best 481.5 points and 36 1st-place finishes in 1996–97. Pavlick ranked 2nd in both categories with 472 points and 32 1st places.
