The Bombers won the state championship for the first time since 1993. Coach Paula Miller was named New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association coach of the year after taking Ithaca to the eighth state title of her tenure. Ithaca went on to finish 15th at the NCAA championship.
The club’s quartet of freshmen Marisa D’Orazio and Jen Souder, junior Debby Werner, and sophomore Renee Helbok had the program’s best showing at nationals, an 8th in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.93). Senior Amanda Liddy (pictured) placed 9th in the 3-meter and 14th in the 1-meter diving competition to pick up honorable-mention all-American recognition. Sophomore Julie Steele earned honorable-mention all-American while setting an Ithaca record in the 200-yard breaststroke, a 2:26.71 clocking that was good for 14th. Sophomore Dara Porterfield was part of five all-American relay groupings, and Helbok joined in with four. Ten Ithaca participants earned all-American status.
Freshman Julie Harrington, who just missed qualifying for the NCAA meet, won the state title in the 400-yard individual medley. Mary Maring earned the 200-yard backstroke crown at the same event. Liddy was named diver of the meet after winning the 1-meter and 3-meter events with school-record totals of 387 and 456.5 points, respectively. Helbok completed the year ranked 1st in wins (31) and points (530.9) on the squad.
