WRESTLING (7-5)

The tandem of head coach Marty Nichols ’90 and assistant Mike Murtha ’92, each a three-time all-American at Ithaca, helped the Bombers to a 7th at the New York State collegiate meet, a 4th at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference tournament, and a 16th at the NCAA championship. The first-year mentors helped the program forget its winless dual-meet campaign of a year ago with a 7-5 season.
Junior John Gemmell was 2nd at 118 pounds at the NCAA meet for the second year in a row, earning all-American honors. He also successfully defended his state crown, the first Bomber to turn the trick since Bart Morrow ’84 did it three years in a row from 1983 to 1985 at 134 pounds. Gemmell finished the campaign with an unblemished 12-0 dual-meet mark and an overall record of 28-2. His nine pins also led the team.
Senior Matt Magner, sophomore Dan Butler, and freshman Felix Martinez also qualified for nationals at 142, 158, and 126 pounds, respectively. Butler and Gemmell had each won ECWC titles.
