The 1997-98 academic year is a transition year for several departmental and academic units in HS&HP. Winifred Mauser completed a three-year term as departmental chair in physical therapy and will be succeeded by Michael Pagliarulo. Mauser provided leadership for the reaccreditation of the physical therapy program.

Roger Riley, a native of New Zealand, will be joining the newly named Department of Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Services (formerly the Department of Recreation and Leisure Services). He earned his doctoral degree from Texas A&M University in recreation and tourism, with a minor in marketing. Since 1993 he has been teaching at Illinois State University, where he received the Illinois State University Meritorious Teaching Award.

Thomas Ormond has left the Department of Health Promotion and Human Movement to accept a position in physical education at Sonoma State University in California. He had been at Ithaca College since 1989. Gary English will assume chair responsibilities for the department.

Rich Retirement

After 26 years at Ithaca College, including service as chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, Sarah Rich will make the transition into early retirement. She began her career at Ithaca College as a coach and physical education instructor. Shortly after acquiring her doctorate from Texas Woman's College, she retired from active coaching to focus on teaching both theory and applied courses in physical education and recreation.

She was instrumental in implementing the concentration in therapeutic recreation, which has grown to a nationally recognized and accredited program. In 1996 she received the Tommy Wilson Memorial Award from the American Association for Leisure and Recreation, which is given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to recreation in programming for individuals with disabilities.
