Spring Sports Review -- Crew

Women's Crew (6-3)

This was a historic spring for the women's crew program as the Bombers participated in the first-ever NCAA Division III women's rowing championship. Ithaca qualified a four and the grouping of coxswain Carrie Richards, Mary Obidinski, Cheryl Hessney, Mandy Flier, and Gail Pekrul, all seniors, engineered a 10th-place showing at the regatta held in Sacramento, California.

Coach Becky Robinson's varsity eight was 6-3 during the regular season. For the third time in six seasons the state championship was canceled by inclement weather. This year's Champion International Collegiate Regatta was held on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Georgia, the site of the 1996 Olympic rowing competition. The varsity eight placed sixth, while the novice eight secured the program's first gold medal since 1990. The lightweight eight added a silver medal and the junior varsity boat was fourth.

Men's Crew (7-3)

Coach Dan Robinson guided the heavyweight boat to its best regular-season record since 1986, a 7-3 mark. Bad weather claimed the men's state championship races, but the unit finished strong with its performance at the CICR event. Ithaca was seeded 16th out of 18 crews involved and furnished a 12th-place result. It was the boat's best effort since 1993.

The varsity lineup featured only three seniors: commodore Greg Naviloff, bow Matt Conroy, and Andy Ward. Ithaca did not float a varsity lightweight boat in 1997.
