OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

The Department of Occupational Therapy moved into a temporary building over the summer. This 10,000-square-foot facility houses the department offices, laboratory classrooms for pediatrics, adult rehab and general activities areas, an "activities of daily living" lab with kitchen and bath, and a seminar room. This year members of the first occupational therapy class completed their summer at the University of Rochester campus, where they joined the physical therapy students in the gross anatomy class and completed their first professional concepts course.

Joining the OT faculty this fall is Professor Marilyn Kane, who comes to us from Keuka College. She is an expert in psychosocial OT and fieldwork. In January Kinsuk Maitra will join the faculty to teach basic sciences. The department staff welcomes Deb Manzer, who began as fieldwork secretary on August 1.

RECREATION AND LEISURE STUDIES

The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is now the Department of Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Services. The name change reflects the current degree programs in the department and gives greater visibility to the newly established degree in therapeutic recreation. Last year the department received reaccreditation for both therapeutic recreation and leisure studies by the National Recreation and Park Association/American Association for Leisure and Recreation Council on Accreditation. Ithaca College is one of only four colleges in the country that offer a major in therapeutic recreation; approximately 100 other institutions offer only a concentration or sequence in this area.

Roger Riley recently joined the department as chair and associate professor. He was most recently a faculty member in the Recreation and Park Administration Program at Illinois State University. He was coordinator for the commercial recreation and tourism sequence and administrative director of the Bureau of Tourism and Recreation Research. His doctoral degree in recreation, tourism, and marketing is from Texas A&M University. A native New Zealander, he has lived in the United States for 14 years, gaining all his postsecondary degrees in this country.

INTERNSHIPS AND KUDOS

The Double "H"-Hole in the Woods Ranch in the Adirondacks, founded by Paul Newman and Charles Wood, provided internship opportunities for four Ithaca College students this past summer. Ithaca College is the only institution with a formal internship agreement with the Double "H" Ranch. The ranch is designed for chronically and terminally ill children from throughout the United States. The students at the ranch this summer included Marie Johnson '97, physical therapy, and seniors Julie Beebe, physical therapy; Sarah Mullen, exercise science; and Mary Ann Soprano, administration of health services. Students who'd been at the ranch in past years were Jeff Craig '96, outdoor recreation; Andrew Loysen '96, outdoor recreation; Melissa Lee '97, physical therapy; Jennifer Parr '96, community health; and Denise Gulielmo '95, community health.

Michael Bonenfant '99, administration of health services, received an Emerson internship award for his summer 1997 work at Albany Medical Center.

In addition, she was selected as the Wegman's "athlete of the month" for June.
