Michael Angelo '60, The Sikh Diaspora: Tradition and Change in an Immigrant Community (New York: Garland Publishing, 1997).

This book is a study of the dynamics of acculturation and the maintenance of cultural traditions in a compact Sikh immigrant community in upstate New York. The author delves into how traditional Sikh values and beliefs have been affected by exposure to American culture.

Lee W. Bailey and Jenny Yates, The Near-Death Experience: A Reader (New York: Routledge, 1998).

Bailey, associate professor of religion and culture, and his coeditor Yates, religion and philosophy professor at Wells College, have compiled a comprehensive survey of studies of near-death experiences. The book is a collection of essays by scholars interpreting the fascinating, little-understood phenomenon from medical, psychological, theological, and philosophical positions. Many cases are detailed --- the terrifying and the peaceful --- as are the transformed lives of those who have survived NDEs.
