Hall of Famers

Nine new membes are inducted,
bringing total to 169.

A coach and eight alumni athletes whose Ithaca College careers span more than a half century were this year’s Sports Hall of Fame inductees at a Homecoming weekend ceremony.

All-state cross-country and track and field athlete Julie Aman May ’90 established Ithaca’s still-standing indoor 800-meter (2:17.13) and outdoor 800-meter (2:12.10) records. She was also an indoor and outdoor 800-meter Eastern College Athletic Confer-ence champion.

All-American football lineman Charles Boots ’61, now the mayor of Massena, New York, was the Bombers’ most valuable player in 1959 and was selected as one of the top 11 Ithaca football players of the 1950s. He later taught and coached at the high school level.

After graduation Lyle Brown ’45 went on to coach soccer, basketball, and baseball at the high school and collegiate levels, including the University of Rochester; his teams won numerous titles.

Now the head women’s soccer coach at Pennsylvania State University, Pat Farmer is the winningest coach in Ithaca women’s soccer history, with a 110-17-23 record in seven seasons and two NCAA Division III national championships (1990 and 1991).

Merwin Fenton ’41 was a three-sport athlete, playing football, track, and baseball at IC. He was later director of athletics and coach at several high schools before retiring in 1971.

All-American soccer goalie Beth Howland ’92 still holds program records for season (16) and career (44) shutouts, season (0.23) and career (0.36) goals-against average, and career wins (40). She played on two NCAA championship teams while at IC.

Vince Roman ’91, now a minor-league hitting instructor with the Texas Rangers, was a two-time baseball all-American at Ithaca, appearing in the NCAA play-offs in each of his four seasons. He is Ithaca’s all-time leader in hits (220) and stolen bases (94).

Football player Fred Seither ’50, named one of the top 11 Ithaca players of the 1940s, taught and coached at the high school level for years. Last year he was inducted into the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame.

Now working as an assistant coach on Farmer’s staff at Penn State, Zak Shaw ’92 was a 1991 soccer all-American. He still holds IC records in career shutouts (31), season goals-against average (0.33), and career goals-against average (0.64).
