  • The first baby conceived by embryo transplant is born in California.
  • The hepatitis virus is identified, a medical breakthrough.
  • Geraldine Ferraro becomes the first woman nominated by a major U.S. political party for the vice presidency.
  • A baboon heart transplant to a human, the first operation of its kind, is performed on a 15-day-old baby girl (Baby Fae).
  • Apple launches the Macintosh computer.

Women’s soccer (photo) has its best season ever, racking up a 12-1-1 record and winning the ECAC mid-Atlantic championship. The wrestling team goes 15-0, setting a school record for wins in a season. The gymnastics team takes the ECAC and NCAA regional tournament championships. The football team finishes 10-1, wins the ECAC northwest championship, and is named ECAC Division III team of the year.
