The College
held a musical celebration in October to commemorate the 8oth birthday
of Karel Husa, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and Ithaca College
School of Music faculty member from 1967 to 1986. Husa also delivered
a guest lecture as this year's Karel Husa Visiting Professor of
Composition. Established in 1987 in his honor, the visiting professorship
brings an eminent composer to campus each year.
The gala concert
featured performances of Husa's Music for Prague 1968 and Celebracion
by the College's symphony orchestra, conducted by Grant Cooper.
The wind ensemble, led by Stephen Peterson with pianist Charts Dimaras,
performed Husa's Concertina for Piano and Winds. Other performers
were the brass choir, conducted by Keith Kaiser; the percussion
ensembles, directed by Gordon Stout and Conrad Alexander; and various
faculty chamber ensembles.
