Angela Cheng Gives Thaler Concert

ChengAngela Cheng --- who has been hailed by critics and audiences worldwide for her remarkable technique, tonal beauty, and musicianship --- performed and gave a master class as this year’s guest artist in the Rachel S. Thaler Concert Pianist Series. Established in 1991 in honor of talented pianist and longtime College supporter Rachel S. Thaler, this series has brought many world-class virtuosos to campus.

Born in Hong Kong, Cheng was the first Canadian citizen to win the prestigious Montreal International Piano Competition. Her many other honors include the Gold Medal at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition in 1986 and the 1991 Medal of Excellence from the Salzburg Mozarteum.

Cheng has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Israel Philharmonic, the Buffalo Philharmonic, and the symphonies of Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Boston, St. Louis, New Orleans, Honolulu, and Houston. An avid recitalist and chamber music collaborator, she has performed in such cities as New York, Washington, Los Angeles, London, Salzburg, Toronto, and Montreal. Cheng received her bachelor of music degree from the Juilliard School and her master of music degree from Indiana University. She is currently a member of the piano faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
